I have a 2004 Landau Elite 200 Tritoon with a 115 hp Suzuki engine. At mid to high speed it is very hard to steer. At slower speeds it is not too bad. Any ideas on how to fix this short of installing some type of power steering?

Re: Hard Steering

I have had several outboards including Suzuki's. My current outboard is a DT140 Suzuki. The Suzuki engine can be stiff to turn even with the best mechanical helm and cables. My 140 is stiff at cruise speeds. The best solution for any large outboard is a hydraulic helm. Yes, they can be pricey but the installation is pretty straight forward giving that you have room and access to the cable runs.

Re: Hard Steering

SeaStar hydraulic steering is in the $700 range plus labor to install it. Someone that's handy can install the steering system and bleed the hydraulic lines.

I have it on my Bennington with a 150 hp outboard. But over 30 mph, my boat is even a little hard to steer. If I wanted to spend another $2K, I could put electric power steering assist on the boat. Any 200 hp or larger pontoon would need the power steering assist, however.

You might want to check into the condition of your steering cables. You might be just a couple of squirts or grease away from easier steering.

Re: Hard Steering

As said hydraulic steering is the best bet- EZ to install too-
But keep in mind pontoon boats are not made to make quick turns at high speeds :faint2:
