Hey Guys & Gals! long time no post!
Have a 87 3.0.
Ran OK but missed at all speeds. At higher rpms it did not run well and had a clacking noise in the motor, enough to make me not run it. Finally broke down and pulled the head. Doesn't look like bad valve and the cyl. walls look good.
Could a bad lifter cause the prob!! None on them are stuck that I can tell.
Any thoughts would be helpfull.

Thanks!

Ayuh,.... It woulda been nice to do some diagnostics before ya tore it apart,....
A compression test mighta told ya where to look....

Did you do Any sorta diagnosis,..?? At All,..??

With the Info posted,... I'd think ya oughta load up all the parts, 'n drag it on over to yer local Machine Shop....

It "Sounds" like it's got some Serious Issues....

I suppose it could be a lifter, but I'm doubtin' it.... What do they Look like,..??

I did a vacuum test that showed MAYBE a valve prob. Loss of comp. on #4 cyl. All others OK.
I kind of expected to find a burnt or broken valve or stuck lifter!
My next step will be to pull the motor and look inside.

When you say 'loss of compression', what were the compression readings?

If it was just low compressions it could be sticky/broken piston rings. 0 compression could be a stuck valve, which popped back as you removed the head...

On the miss... what spark plugs you running? And when was the ignition system give a thorough tune up?

Chris....

Re: Hard tap, loss of compression 87 3.0

The valves were all moving, had it running with cover off. Comp was about 150 on all but #4, it was 70.
Adjusted the valves according to the manual. (I have recently read a post that said the manuals method over tightened the lifters). Plugs are ones spec for the motor. Ign. system is new.
Oh ya...There was blue Permatex on the head gasket...?? Never heard of that.. Had to blow the head off with comp.air so it was hard to tell if there was a bad spot.I'm gunna go through the lifters and see if the are all pumping.
