Hi,
I would like to ask you about 02 highly concern questions on my Johnson 225 Model: E225CXCED
1- Every morning it´s difficult to start; even the engine cranks for more than 10 minutes, finally the engine start! Why it takes to long time to crank and no start!
I´ve checked battery, new spark plugs, good starter, new fuel filter, new power pack...
It seems to be the startor as a friend told me!
So, if there are some problems with stator, please tell me how can I check it.(Resistance values)
2- As a consecuence of long time cranking, battery dead...but when engine start, it does not charge the battery again! Also, RPM´s meter gauge does not works properlly.
Please, tell me how can I check the rectifier in this engine.

Finally, can you inform me about the year of this engine, taking as reference the model of the engine.

Thanks for your kind attention.

Carlos Eduardo
Venezuela

Re: HARD TO COLD START & NO BATTERY CHARGE

Hello
Your engine is a 1989.
As for the poor starting but starting in the end.You have to do a one by one system check starting with spark. If there are no problems with spark, you must check if your fuel enrichener works. If not electronically, then manually.Just open the little red handle on the enrichener a few seconds and try to start. If that works, your problem is localized to the fuel enrichener. And so on.Kill them one at a time.
As for your charge. An outboard engine does not really have a very strong charger. If your battery is empty, just charge it with a car charger.

As has been pointed out numerous times in this forum, a bad rectifier will cause your tach not to work and will not charge your battery. If your tach is not working properly, then it is most likely that your rectifier is bad, of course the other possiblity is a bad tach, but that would not cause your charging system to not work. :)

Re: HARD TO COLD START & NO BATTERY CHARGE

carlos
keep bumping this thread,
ill be in caracas about 10:30 pm dec 15th. if the plane dont crash.
had I seen the post earlier I have a few parts for that motor.
I also know a good tech in Rio Chico, I gave him all the manuals and DVA and DVM,s nessasary to test that system and he has factory OMC training.
guys name is chino.
I take parts and tools down south every trip I make, my fiance is coming up in april for a week so if ya need something not avalible there resonably Ill see what I can do.
but this time I am taking some stuff to some kids at the tacharigua(spelling) lagoon. I got 3 soccor balls,a basket ball a football,5 zebco spinning rod kids,5 baseball gloves,3 base balls and a 31" AL bat.
I hope to make 5 kids smile for christmas.
but I am also gonna do a bit of roballo and saballo fishing then on to Guri for some Payara and pavon.
them Payara look slam mean.
but keep in touch
I have another job interview in puerta la cruz and I may look towards the maricabo area.
but I am thinking the maricabo area is just to hot for the old white skinned boy.
the fact the tach does not work properly indicates a charging issue, could be a bad stator or a bad regulator/rectifier assy.
both are exspensive so I would test things first
I speak no spanish, Chino speaks no english, my fiancee is a certified translator.
so keep looking and Ill hook up

Re: HARD TO COLD START & NO BATTERY CHARGE

Carlos,

I agree the symptoms point toward the rectifier/regulator and or stator, one test that can be done easily is to check your voltage at the battery terminals with the motor running, you should get a reading of at least 13.5 volts, anything less points towards your charging system.

You'll need an OEM service manual for the proper info and procedure on testing the rectifier/regulator. Also you could inspect the stator for any signs of overheating such as cracks or a sticky, tar like substance dripping off of it. According to the links below you should get a reading of 765-935 OHMS on your stator and a min. peak DVA of 150V. There's a lot of other info and instructions for troubleshooting your system in there as well.

http://outboardparts.com/omc/troubleshooting/troubleshooting5.htm
http://outboardparts.com/omc/troubleshooting/trublshtinghlp.htm

Hope this helps some and Good Luck ;)

Re: HARD TO COLD START & NO BATTERY CHARGE

Many thanks for your replies!
I´ve checked for spark, and it seems that "no spark" at the first seconds of cranking!...
After several minutes cranking, suddenlly the sparks appear like magic...I made the test with all spark plugs out!...so the engine start later also because the enrichener is working...I confirmed.
Now, I must to check for the stator, as MCM recommended...so thanks MCM for troubleshooting web pages.
>Definitivelly the problem is "spark".<
RODBOLT, nice to know about you...when you´ll visit to Puerto La Cruz?
Tacarigua is a nice place, where you can catch some "lebranche" that is a nice fish...As I told you before, in Puerto La Cruz, about 2.5Hr far from Tacarigua, you can find more Marinas for service, better boats, newer engines, etc. I live in Palafitos near great marinas! If you have plan to visit please call me and we can meet in Marina Puerto Viejo, Centro Marino de Oriente, Bahia Redonda, etc
email: carlos.schemel@mmcautomotriz.com
I´ll take vacations next week.
Thanks to everybody for your attention.
Best Regards
Carlos Eduardo
Venezuela
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year...
Keep boating

Carlos,
Also check out the following site for a troubleshooting guide (a lot of this is reprinted from the Rapair troubleshooting guide which can be downloaded from www.rapair.com)

http://www.boatpartstore.com/tips.asp

You've got a problem with both your charging circuit (stator or rectifier/regulator) and it seems your ignition. The first thing I'd do is to disconnect the charging circuit (yellow wires from the stator to the rectifier/regulator) and see if the engine fires. If so could be a faulty rectifier/regulator.

Re: HARD TO COLD START & NO BATTERY CHARGE

Carlos,

One thing to remember is that motor needs at least 350 rpm to generate enough voltage to make a spark if everything is in good shape. Also put a voltmeter directly on the starter frame and cable terminal to check voltage while cranking. It should be above 9.6V and closer to or about 10 volts. Also check the battery terminals for voltage, there should be no more than 2 volts difference, or you have cable and connection problems.

Look up under the flywheel and see if you can see black "goo" dripping from the stator assembly. If so, it may need replacing along with your regulator. Be sure to use nuts and lockwashers on the batteries, not wing nuts.

Feliz Navidad
