hard to find neutral and grinds into foward

i have an 1987 bayliner with a 85 horse force motor. it runs great i just have trouble going into forward. it grinds like a gear is not catching then it will catch and all is good never pops out of gear or anything like that but i have to put the throttle almost all of the way down for it to catch . then when i turn the boat off i have to play with the throttle to find neutral to be able to start the boat again. im thinking the shifter cable needs to be adjusted along with an oil change and was wondering if you guys think the same thing or is it more then that? any thing i can do to test this or any other info would be very helpful.

It sounds as if the gear shift linlage in the foot of the moror neede adjusting. You would have to remove the side shroud on the foot to gain access. It is adjusted properly when your shifter is in the neutral position and the prop will turn ( by hand ) in either direction without making a clicking sound or other noise.

You need to adjust the cable and shift linkage. It is an easy job but you will need a manual to do it. I suggest the Clymer Force Outboard Shop Manual as it has good information and is readily available.
