a guy gave me a 1973 tide craft boat with a 1972 50 hp evinrude on it. the model number is 50273c
here is my problem it is very hard to get started it will usually run both my batteries down before it will finally start. then only after i change plugs. they are wet put dry ones in motor starts. first i think the wrong plugs are in it because both sets of plucs do not have and never had the thing where you gap them at. do i need to get the right plugs? also am i missing some adjustment that will make this easier to start? the motor runs great once you get it started. have already cleaned carbs and adjusted them like the book said to. i am getting fuel or plugs would not have fuel on them. any help would be great. have looked at other post but did not find anything that would help.
thanks,
ratt

The plug you should be using is QL77JC4 gapped at .30
The model number for a 1972 engine should be 50ESL72C, 50R72C, 50ESL72C, or 50RL72C.

Actually, his model number could be correct. It shows up on the model number list.

If this guy is grinding his batteries flat trying to start this 50, then new plugs are not going to fix it. He needs to start from step one and go through the will not start FAQ.

Something ain't right and it's not just plugs.

CA, where did you get your info on engine models?

I agree, but he needs to start with the correct plugs first and go from there.

Re: hard to start 1972 50 hp evinrude

please note that my model number is correct as 50273c same on tag as well as on block plug and every where i have checked sayes it is a 72 motor. purchased two new sets of plugs and still having same problem I am going to overhaul the carbs when my kits come in. think my problem is to much fuel. noticed that there was fuel coming out exhaust when i was running it on the muffs did not notice that at the lake cause was not looking for it thank you for all the help

I stand corrected, I was looking under the Johnson models and not Evinrude.
What plugs are you using?
If the engine is flooding then the carb kits are a definate.

Re: hard to start 1972 50 hp evinrude

well i am now using a l77j4 the old plugs were ul77v i think they are called center fire plugs
When i took the old plugs out they had alot of oil on them. checked new plugs and they were the same way anyway i believe that overhauling carbs will solve my problem. This motor has been sitting since 1996 and i was hoping that just cleaning them would be ok but guess not. but if anyone has another sugestion that i can try while i am waiting for my carb kits i will sure try them thank again

Again, use QL77JC4 plugs only. You can buy them at Napa.

Basscat.

I always use the marineengine.com model lists. You're right...those were Johnson numbers. Oh, well...model numbers are the least of the problems.

The right plugs will help, and so will clean carbs. There could be some other ignition work needed, though, I'd guess.

ACVB40FFM or UL77V.is the pluggs that in in the original shop manul. the plugs that dont gap is easy to foul and willnot not start . the gap pluggs is what i use L77JC4 or QL77JC4. i have a 50 hp 1972 and ran one other 50 hp for close to 10 years for years. use them in my 1979 55hp evinrude

i think carb are prob since it has sat since 1996 and all i did was clean carbs i think i may have a bad needle valve which will come with carb kit hopefully that will solve prob. but anyway all help is good. fuel pump works good voltage where it needs to be last thing is too much fuel. thanks for all input will keep all informed it may help someone else. :)
