Hey guys at the beginning of boating season i changed oil and spark plugs and took her out. The first 3 or 4 trips in the water it would backfire through the carb just a bit. I thought it was water in the gas tank so i drained thetank put new water seperator filter on and inline carb filter. Took it ou again and it still backfired through the carb.

It was always right at 2500 rpms just as i was about to plane out. Then someone suggested that my timing was off. So my brother-in-law adjusted it just a hair and for 2 weeks now it has run perfect. So last fri we go out for a long weekend and put in the water fri morning and it takes about 2 min to start. We had driven through a big rainstorm and just thought everything was a little wet. Runs fine until sat night when we pull up to the marina. It was docked for less than 10 min. And it did'nt want to start back up took another 2 or 3 min of turning it over( i didn't turn it over more than 10 sec at a time) Finally started back up and drove fine back to the trailer.

Sunday morning we decide to put back in the water and see what it does and it starts right up. about halfway through the day sunday it starts to backfire through the carb again this time at different rpms, 1500 1900 and 2200 rpms. I stop the boat when it starts backfiring to let the girls on the tube in the boat and it doesn't want to start back up. We get towed back to where the trailer is and i try to start it to drive it on the trailer and it starts right up. I have a 1992 5.0 omc ford 302 with a cobra outdrive. Never had a problem out of it last year. My question is did adjusting the timing just hide the previous problem of backfiring through the carb or do i just have 2 seperate problems now. We played on the water probably 10 hrs on sat and 10 hrs on sunday stopping 15 times or more each day. So i don't think it would be the choke on the carb bc it did'nt want to start only twice. . . . anybody got a clue at what im looking at?

How old are the plug wires? .. You may have cracked a plug putting them in. could have a bad spark plug. could be bad/cracked dist cap, Points? or Electronic Ignition ? Carb setting could be a little off, a friend had a 302 with a 2bbl and it was VERY finicky on the idle mixture setting. 1/16th of a turn this or that way cured starting issue.
