Hello all..I recently bought a 2007 Larson with a Volvo Penta 5.0 GXI. 80% of the time if fires up as an efi should. The other 20% of the time I have to lay on the key for a few extra seconds before it starts. Not a huge deal but I noticed it was happening more often after a long outing pulling tubes and skiers. Any ideas on where to start troubleshooting?

Let the motor idle in neutral about 10 seconds or so before killing it when pulling tubes. My first thought is heat soak to the carb.

Intermittent issues are hard to find. Maybe electrical or fuel issue and assuming the motor is shut down for a short time, then restated and goes again. Being MPI I would lean more toward electrical but could still be fuel pressure.

Simple things like a weak fuel pump relay or contact. Try to pay close attention when it does it to see if anything else is noticed during these times.
Does the motor beep when key first is turned ON?
Do you hear the fuel pump?
When cranking does the tachometer show in the area of 300 RPM?

How fresh is your gas? Mine has similar behavior when burning through the gas stored all winter, even with stabilizer. Once I put fresh gas in it starts right away every time.

Good thoughts here. I will pay attention to these things next time I’m out on the water

if you have the crab style cap, it wont hurt to change the distributor cap. they last about 2 years. however that would be more of a mis-fire all the time.

I have the same problem with my 4.3 GXI. Changed the cap and rotor and it did help some. You can try running the blower while doing tow sports to help keep the engine bay a little cooler. Other than that I've just learned to live with it.
