Re: hard to start

before you start buying parts, check every battery connection and make sure that they are clean.

battery+ to relay
relay to starter
battery - to engine block

that's a total of six cable ends that need to be clean and snug.

IF you have a known good battery with known good connections
AND the starter kicks in but doesn't turn strongly enough
THEN either the starter needs to rebuilt or the engine is seized

Re: hard to start

ditto.

FYI- the stator generates power for the ignition and charging curcuit. It can not draw power away.

Re: hard to start

Sounds like the stator is not recharging the battery. Remember, never run the engine out of water not even with "ear muffs". You can easily burn up the impeller as well as the motor. Perform starter circuit tests. If all test are good, then test your stator. Prior to testing, have battery checked. Even new batteries can have "bad" cells.

Re: hard to start

With the plugs out, you should be able to turn the flywheel by hand and with little to no resistance. If you can't, then the engine is seized.

Re: hard to start

Starter brush carbon mixes with damp air and builds up in the starter springs. What this does is the spring looses its tension and will not hold the brush to the armature as well. 90 percent of the time the starter just needs to be taken apart and cleaned with contact cleaner or WD40. It is pretty simple and cheap. An aftermarket starter starts at 120 dollars on the smaller force motors. If after taking the starter apart and finding it is trashed you are not out any money.

Re: hard to start

I just replyed to you other Q.. With the symptoms you are describing in this post along with the other symptoms I think you have a serious problem. Never run you motor out of the water even with muffs for more than a minute or two. You may have burned out your impeller, and overheated the engine. I would tell you you have lost a cylinder and you may be close to a total seize. GOOD LUCK
