Hard to start

1959 18 evinrude. New points, condensers, coils, ignition wires the steel type, and plugs. Rebuilt carb last year, fresh gas premium 25 to 1 oil mix. Compression is 115-120 on both holes. What am I missing? Even bypassed the stop button at the points. Have lots of blisters and no satisfaction. Any suggestions?

Re: Hard to start

Is it hard to start or no start? Got fuel to carb? got spark?

Re: Hard to start

Will start at full throttle only has to be in gear to achieve full throttle, very dangerous situation.

Re: Hard to start

Do you have the proper plugs? Check the diagram for your particular engine to get the plug part number, then make sure you are using the proper model number plug. Where is your slow speed needle set at while you are pulling. I have a 25R73 and my engine would sneeze and start at 1 1/8 turn out. Are you positive you replaced all items correctly in your carb? Check your fuel lines, if they are questionable go to your local parts store and get a couple feet of it and replace all of them. I also had a problem at my fuel pump (a crack in the cover) I am not sure what type of fuel pump you have but if it is questionable again you should replace the gaskets. If it will start at full throttle that tells me that there needs to be alot of fuel in the firing chamber for it to fire. I would start at the fuel lines, check the low speed needle, rebuild the fuel pump, ensure your float in the carb is to spec. But first and formost be sure you have the proper plugs.

Re: Hard to start

Champion J6C is what they reccomend, There is no fuel pump, it is a twin line system, last year for that. It has been steadily harder and harder to start this motor for the past year despite my efforts as documented above. is the motor just tired. Is 115psi just too low for good starting?

Re: Hard to start

I will tell you that I do not have alot of experience with these outboard motors, but if it will start with full throttle in gear I would think there is an issue with the fuel system. Hopefully someone with more experence will chime in soon.

Only runs WOT .... sounds like the idle circuit may have clogged passages... How familiar are you with rebuilding carbs? Did you soak the body's and blow everything out with compressed air? I don't know your level of mechanical abilities.... Has this issue started after you did the carb?

Re: Hard to start

have you tried a few drops of fuel /oil directly into the cyls and the try to start it in the start position? is your pressure tank holding pressure?

Re: Hard to start

Carb is soaking in carb cleaner and I did notice upon removing the aluminum plug that there was some silicon floating around in the little chamber under the plug. When reinstalling new plug is it necessary to use silicon? Does anyone have an exploded view of the 1959 18 hp carb as the rebuild kit from sierra didn't come with one??? It would be a big help as there are lots of new seals in the package and I'm not sure where to place them all.
Thanks

No sealer needed on the welch plug. Just tap it to flatten it out. Kit probably contains more stuff than you need, as they usually service more than one carb.

Re: Hard to start

Yeah silicone should not be used anywhere on an outboard. I personally dont use anything on the welch plugs but have heard of guys using nail polish or 3M if they are worried about leaks.

Your compression is fine for that motor. You mention that you replaced ignition components, but did not say whether you verified that you are getting good spark to jump 1/4" gap on an inline tester? Did you?

Having good compression, bright spark, clean plugs properly gapped, you should get momentary fire when you spray a little pre mixed fuel into the cylinder. If you do there is an issue with your fuel delivery and should troubleshoot from there.

There is a thread in the Top Secret File that will help with the carb rebuild.
