I'm upgrading my electronics and while I have everything off the hard top I want to refinish it. The top is definately an add on from previous owner and made of fiberglass, but very very very thin. I have aluminum framing welded on the underside for support and strength but the overall fiber top is very thin, and the fibers are starting to show and be exposed (getting fibers stuck in my hands if I lean on it while walking up to the bow.

My question is what can I do to thicken/strengthen the top? I'm thinking a layer or 2 of epoxy resin like west system 105/ 205, and 2-3 coats of awlgrip. What are your thiughts? I'd rather not apply gel coat as it is a rather large area and I have never gelcoated before nor do I have the proper spray gun to apply.

Some good pics would help the crew here steer ya in the right direction .. Is it just the outside of the top or both sides ?

Boat is still shrink wrapped so I don't have any pics. I'm just refinishing the top. I'm assuming the weather and sun got to the top, which caused the finish to fade off and expose the fibers. I also do not think they too was built all that solid and think the design was to be significantly light
