So I have a good reverse rotation 350 small 1972 Block Chevy out of a Chris Chraft. Carb to pan & Balancer to Flywheel.

I have a vintage JetBoat whith a Berkley jet drive. I can handle mounting the motor in the boat- backwards so it spins correctly for the jet drive.

But.......

Question-

Can I just bolt the drive line to the existing holes in the harmonic balancer ( It wont grenade?)

or does it take a "special" balancer to be the PTO? Or I'm I really lost?

Thanks

Why not just change the engine to run in normal rotation? Some of the other guys may want to chime in, but I believe you would need to change the Cam and or cam drive (may be gears instead of a chain), the starter, and the crank seals.

Not to sure the crank snout would last long being connected to the jet. Theres a reason the back of the crank is allot more substantial than the snout.;)

Those old CC's had some strange setups back in the early 70's. Reversed engines (front to back) and reverse rotation. Not sure why they had to run the transmissions off the front of the engine. Those engines also had a really strange set of special CC castings, special cams special distributors, special......... You get the idea.

Why are you so set on using that setup, what was in it before, can't you just use the Chris block and a regular cam and the old stuff off your engine?

While you could probably get away with driving off the nose of the crank, that is the smallest part of the crank and being familiar with front-mounted water pumps on fire engines of years gone by I can attest to the fragile nature of the cranks. The nose of a crank is powering other stuff and is really not designed to take that kind of beating (shock loading).

Bubba's right about impeller selection. Intakes, drive snouts, and ride shoes/plates can make a big difference in how it all works too.

If you haven't checked out Berkeley's web site, you should consider taking a peak. www.berkeleyjet.com

This tech info should help you with impeller selection; http://www.berkeleyjet.com/Instructions/impeller_info.pdf

These are some good forums that deal specifically with classic jet boats as well (we're not a main stream bunch).

Most of that information is good, much of it I had. But my question stll remains-

What is the driveline only hardware from the crank snout to the driveline?

Thanks all

Peace

Finally found it, here is a .pdf file (7MB) of the setup used by ChrisCraft for those Flywheel forward engines. Page 6 of the manual shows how the dampner and flex plate are attached. On page 9 you will find the Timing cover, looks a lot different than a standard cover for a Chevy, doesn't it.
You may also have an intake manifold that has the angled carb flange cast onto the manifold, that would be another problem, since the carb has to set level when the engine is installed.

There you go... Your the man....

Thank you very much. Mounting angles what it powers off it & Cooling it I'm already down with that.

This simply connected the dots in a few areas,

I Believe the Spring flex plat isn't needed as I don't have a prop to shock the drive train with if it was hit....?

The parts are around ... they're obviously not at Pic Kwic. but neither are the parts I already have for it- Reverse mount Flagship Alumium Bell Housing yadda.....

Thanks again & I'll let you know where I get stuck... then maybe you can Raz me ; ) Peace!
