The local gas stations here on long island are now selling gas with 10% methanol .
I checked the Nissan manual and they say do not use any gas with more then 5% methanol in it and go on to detail all the damages possible including destroying the piston and cylinder and various other problems including all rubber parts.
I have not checked all the other local stations yet, so I do not know if they are all going to 10% methanol.
Does anyone have knowledge of this problem?
We live in the new york long island area, and are presently paying about $3.10 for gas that can ruin all our equipment, thanks a lot big oil!
Bill

Menthanol or ethanol? They are going to 10% ethanol here in Texas and my service manual says that's ok for the newer Mercs.

Mark

Gee whiz another fuel thread. There are now about six threads on this topic. When reading them make sure you understand the difference between the common term "blended fuel" which is known around the US as "regular". It's 90% regular gas and 10% ethanol. Its been around for years in many states. Ethanol or E-85 is now emerging and is just the opposite. Its 15% regular gas and 85% ethanol -- not methanol. It cannot be used in outboards except those in special markets (outside the US). E-85 cannot be used in cars unless they manufactured to run on it. Many currently are although the owners don't even know it and continue to run regular. Granted, E-85 is not widely available outside the midwest.

It's not a problem at 10%. It can be a problem at 15%. It's a major problem at 20%.

Re: Harmfull gas

Benefits

* Ethanol is domestically produced and allows us to reduce our use of imported petroleum
* Ethanol emits less carbon monoxide than gasoline
* Adding oxygenates like ethanol to gasoline reduces carbon monoxide emissions
* Ethanol production supports U.S. farmers and creates jobs

when i go on the goverment sights i cant get any hard facts on just what level of clean the
Ethanol brings

the fact that they harp on it helping farmers so MUCH I think the polution reduction is rather minor and may HAVE NO NET effect as i burn more fuel overall

tommays

tommays,

Do you have any idea what brands of gas on long island have ethanol in them , and what brands of gas have methanol mixed in ?
By the way I recently read that gas with ethanol in it attacks the resin in fiberglass boat gas tanks , the result is that the degraded resin travels with the gas thru the engine and can destroy the pistons and varius other parts.
This may have no effect on auto gas tanks as most are steel , but a lot of boats have fiberglass tanks built in.

Bill
