Has anybody built their own portable carport?

I'm going to be restoring my old Chevy pickup, and I'd like to buy one of those portable enclosed carports to do it in. The 10x20 models can be found many places for under $200, though I'd be much happier with something closer to 12x25, which is more like $400-600.

Has anyone built one of these things themselves? It's just a bunch of pipe and some tarps. I'm thinking I could use 1" galvinzed EMT conduit for the frame....would that be strong enough?

I'd also have to custom cut some tarps to fit. Does anyone know how I would go about hemming a tarp? The one I just looked at appears to just be folded over and glued, with a peice of twine running along the edge. What kind of glue would I use for that?

I think that they use Fencing grade tubing for those things,..... EMT would work,... You might have to add some bracing,.....

The kind of material that the tarp you choose is made of, will determine what to use for a glue..........

That does make it a bit easier.

You can buy the tarp bungies too, to go to the gromets

Hey ZmOz, how bout one of these from Costco. All powder painted supports and stainless hardware. Also comes with all side and end panels (which I did not use) all for $165.00. It is 10 x 20. IMHO by the time you try to build one yourself, you'd have more money and not as good of components.

You'd have $50.00, for starters, in those ebay pieces that'd turn rusy within a week.

Re: Has anybody built their own portable carport?

ZmOz,
I bought a 10x20 in 2001 at a home improvement store in my area called Menards. (I think this is a midwest chain only). The normal price was $100, and I got it on sale for $70. One of the best buys I have ever made. I have left this thing up for 4 months at a time with only a slight wearing of the top at the peak. (easily remendied with some clear duct tape run down the entire length on the inside). As a matter of fact it is up now being used as a temporary "work shop" while I am working on an old Mercury Mark 6.

The following is what is on the Instructions...

North American Outdoor Products
17 Wood Street
West Haven, CT 06516
1-800-524-9970

10 X 20 Deluxe Canopy Model #23511

I don't know if they make this model anymore. I hope so, because there was also an option available which included three sides and a roll up side for the door. And the last time I checked, it was only around 50-60 bucks.

I noticed in the ebay one that it only had 4 corner posts..I think that would be pretty flimsy.
Mine has 4 poles going down both sides. Very sturdy, especially when staked to the ground. I have seen many since I got mine that had only 3 poles down the sides on a 10 x 20 which IMO would still be on the flimsy side. Especially during heavy rains and most importantly, if it will be in any snow storms. Can't let ANY snow build up. That's from experience :) ...I've had other shelters collapse (EZ-UP and Quik-Shades)

You also mentioned using standard blue tarps. I have also had plenty of "experience" with tarps..lol..and better to get a heavier grade with reinfored grommets. Otherwise, you will be buying blue tarps like you do toilet paper. They wear out quickly.

Also, in my experience, I bought a grommet "tool" and added grommets in between the factory ones.
Another trick I learned is running the biggest rope you can get thru the grommets the full perimeter of the tarp. Then anchor your ground ropes to the perimeter rope...otherwise a healty gust of wind will pull the grommets out if you were using the rope from the grommet to the ground. Hope that made sense.

At first I was going to build one myself, but after adding up the cost, the factory ones came out way cheaper....even at full price. And good tarps "ain't" cheap.

Sorry this got so lengthy. I spent about two straight years fighting a second story deck(over a living area to boot) leak and went through a crapload of tarps. Turned into a nightmare, so if I can save anyone the kind of crap I went through, I am more than happy to pass my "tarp knowledge" along.

If you like, I can scan the instructions that came with this shelter and email them to you. Might give you some ideas for the one you are going to build.

good luck,
chuck

Re: Has anybody built their own portable carport?

Hey, sorry about that coming up twice. I'm really screwing up my first time posting...too lenghty and coming up twice as well. I was going to try to delete one of them, but I'd probably screw that up too.

I like your "prop" Boomyal.

ZmOz..that one that Boomyal got from Costco is nicer than the one I have. Mine isn't powder coated, it's galvinized. Plus, it already has the sides...not to mention a great price. That's the way to go IMO.

I'm going to Costco this pm and see if they have one. I might do my whole yard in these.

goodluck,
chuck

Re: Has anybody built their own portable carport?

Yeah, I've seen lots of the 10x20s for cheap, but the problem is my truck is about 7x18...2 feet isn't enough to change an engine when it's raining. :) All the ones just a few feet larger are closer to $500 like this one: http://cgi.ebay.com/Portable-Instan...405603775QQcategoryZ20721QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Last night I found some 14x48 vinyl tarps for sale that are former billboard signs. They're a nice, extra thick, white tarp on one side. Only $30. :D

I can think of a lot of uses for those(former billboard signs). Where do you find something like that?

I have seen 10x20's positioned end to end. And to make them a bit more wide, pull one side out at the bottom and anchor it. Just a thought..and still under $400.

whichever way you go, good luck.
chuck.

Re: Has anybody built their own portable carport?

This is just a guess on my part, but I would think the fence top rail would be better, plus aren't those corners on ebay 1 3/8" ?

THANKS for that info on the tarp. Those are heavy duty. I just measured the cover on my 10x20 and it was approx. 13 ft. One of those would be a perfect replacement, with enough left over for a camping shelter. thanks again.

chuck.

Boomyal, what is your cover called? I looked at Costco and couldn't find it.

Looks like something I could use.
