I noticed my manual talks of a retaining ring that fits on the WP shaft for the shaft seal. The thing is, there wasn't one on the shaft when I took it apart? I have an 800 OMC and the shaft does have a groove for the retaining ring or snap ring. Should I just forget about it? I cannot find this thing on the net. Should I go to local auto parts store and see if they have a retaining clip this size?

It's nothing more than a formed spring wire. Part # is 0909163. Doug Russell shows it is still available. Cost more in shipping than the part.

Geeez, would you believe it if I told you Russell was close to $40 for the snap ring and key and shipping?? What a rippppppppppppppppppppppppppppppp!!! They charge you a fee for ordering anything under $20.

Ring = .99
Key = Close to $10
Shipping = 8.50
The rest = service/handling fee.

Went to local marina and they had one for .99 plus tax. Didn't have the key but the guy said to clean up the old one and it would be fine.

My manual says to use Scotch rubber adhesive to glue the spline seal to the shaft. I can't find this stuff. Can I just use Ultra Black permanex?

Ya, go ahead... I don't think I used anything to be honest. It's purpose is to keep the grease in and water out as much as possible. Early models had problems with the spines corroding and striping out or freezing in place.
