My new project 1991 johnson has a VRO

Owner says the VRO may have been the problem with scoring the cylinder walls.

Looking to decommission the VRO

There is a ton of info on here about people disabling the oil pump on a VRO and pre mixing....they plug the oil line near the carbs... and remove all the wires to the VRO,,,and pre mix....

I did this two years ago on my 1992 Cajun with Johnson 115. Haven't had any problems at all, dump in approx. a quart of two-stroke per 10 gallons. Tons of arguments for and against but the piece of mind is priceless.

I didn't do it myself, but my 1992 90 hp V-4 was installed on my 1978 VIP with the VRO disabled. I premix 50:1 and it does fine.

Very simple, regular topic of discussion on this board:

While you're still running the oil mixing pump, run premix gas to flush the raw gas out of carb bowls, fuel lines, filters, etc.

Cut oil line near the fuel pump, plug with a bolt and hose clamp. Make sure there's absolutely no air leaks. I personally recommend this rather than disconnecting the oil line and replacing with a rubber vacuum cap. I had a pump that was d/c'd that way and the rubber cap degenerated and leaked air.

Unplug the wire harness from the fuel pump (will have 3 or 4 pins, probably 4).

Remove tank and disconnect wires running from tank to engine.

Tape and/or secure the loose wires and plugs in engine compartment so there's no chance of shorting.

Here's some good info on the system: http://continuouswave.com/whaler/reference/VRO.html. I personally prefer and trust the VRO/OMS system and it's 1,000X more convenient for me than premix (built in tanks), but ran a previous, similar engine w/ premix for many years on this boat too.

I was able to find a mounting brackett off a old motor and it fit right on. The motor I have now the previous owner had done took off the vro. He drilled a couple of holes in the air box and mounted it there. works great.
