Finally found a motor that will fit my boat unfortunately I couldnt find the VP so I picked up a merc 3.0l with about a 100hrs on it(boat had no motor and only the cobra leg). Merc is going on my Cobra SX leg. Has anyone swapped these engines before? ie. coupled a merc to a cobra leg.

Heres some info Ive collected to do the job..feel free to fill in the blanks.

1. VP coupler is required (i have the 14" flywheel and the old bellhousing)
2. Alignment tool will be required
3. Manifolds...are these different on the 3.0l motors (merc vs penta)? If so can it be adapted to fit or is it a straight up swap?
4. Throttle cables
5. Possible new wiring harness. Is there an adapter harness?

Cheers!

Yes, you need the VP coupler and flywheel cover.

2. Alignment tool will be required
Absolutely.

Hard to say, they change from year to year. Put the engine in ans see if the exhaust elbow lines up with the exhaust tube going to the transom shield.

4. Throttle cables
Will take a different type cable end, there are merc adapters, and may have to change direction in the helm control.

5. Possible new wiring harness. Is there an adapter harness?
Should just plug in fine with no changes.
