I'm looking to replace the transom in my 64 17' crestliner runabout(fiberglass) and am trying to figure out what material to use. Has anybody used nidabond? its supposed to be similar to seacast but a lot cheaper.

never use'd it but have use'd sea cast .
sea cast relys greatly on the fiberglass that covers it , wood would be more forgiveing

The Nidabond I'm familiar with isn't even the same type of product as Sea Cast. It?s desined for bedding balsa and other types of core, not to be as a core.

I just ordered the nida bond transom pourable compound and it arrived on 1-29-09 I am hoping to be using the product within the nest two weeks three at the lates. I had to to the via email quite a few times and finally decided to order it because of some of the things that they told me about. They told me that there is wellcraft has been using in the boats for the last 50000 production boats. The price was cheaper to order the nida bond but the shipping was very expensive. It was $200.00 to ship five buckets of nida bond from lower florida to southeast louisiana even with the high shipping cost it was still cheaper then seacast. You will also have to provide your own hardener MEKP to mix into the nida bond.

a wood transom done correctly will last 20 years. Odds are you wont have the same boat in 20 years anyways.

Wooden transom replacement requires a lot more surgery than a pourable transom, if you are ripping it all out anyway then wood is the way to go,

but if the transom is being replaced from the top with no other work done to stringers or splashwell then pouring saves a ton of finish work.

Seacast costs twice as much as the nidacore.

Also, arjay ceramic is another pour in type.

It all works, its all fun.

I'm replacing stringers too, they're rotten as well.
And legoman you're right, I probably won't have the boat in 20 years.

A composite transom should be a selling point when you sell.

If only the transom needed work then I'd consider the nidabond/sea cast, but since the stringers are shot I'd go wood. Sounds like you're going to have to tear it all out anyway.

Yeah I've got a lot of grinding to do. bought a pile of wheels for the angle grinder had harbor freight.
Normally I think composite transom would make a good selling point. but since the boat is a 1964 I'm not sure how much value it has anyway.

Just finished a transom repair on a 14' pere marquette closed bow.Replaced stringers, floor, along with transom.Removed inside fiberglass and replaced with 1/4" ply saturated and covered with resin/cloth.Poured transom and used excess to radius stringers to hull. Will be in water shortly.Mounting an 85 hp Johnson for power.
