Haunted trim pump!!

Hello all,
you may recall my post about the intermittent spontaneous operation of the trim pump when the motor (Yamaha 2003 F115 4stroke)is not running. As a precaution I fitted a Perko switch to isolate the motor which so far I have had to use once as the pump just kept running. It is always down and I can stop momentarily it by holding any of the trim switches in the up direction but as soon as I release the trim switch the trim motor starts again, always down. The dealer is not being at all aggresive saying they can't reproduce the problem in the shop (I can understand that as it is totally random and unpredictable) but they just won't try anything. I have 3 trim switches; one at the front, one on the throttle and one on the motor.Does anyone have any suggestions for a test.proceedure? Are these switches interconnected, do they all have to be connected for any one of them to work? Can I perhaps disconnect each of them in turn and try to identify a bad switch or section of wiring? I tend to think it is one of the switches or a short circuit energizing the relay. or perhaps the relay itself. Are the up and down relays interchangeable? If I swapped them and the motor then went up at randon that would indicate a bad relay? Comments / suggestions welcome. Thanks...W

Most often the switch in the boat is the problem. They are all wired together in the harness. Corrosion or water in the switch will cause a temporary short. Very common on bass boats where the front switch is exposed to the weather, ect. Locate where the switch is plugged into the harness and disconnect when the problem happens to prove which switch has the problemm.

I just fixed a similar ghost tilt activation in my Evinrude. It was a stray strand of wire at the solder terminal on the tilt switch crossing over to the power wire at odd times. I needed a magnifying glass just to see it. I was just standing around and the motor just went up. Could be dangerous if you're fiddling with the engine  I think I prefer the wiring on my old Suzuki, you had to turn the key on to energize the tilt-trim.

Skeeter had a problem with the switch in the bow. Rainwater would get in and settle at the bottom of the toggle switch and corrode the metal until the corrosion met and tripped the UP solenoid. The factory switches are rather well protected. Aftermarket switches tend not to be sealed so well. It could be any of those 3 switches, but I'd bet on the one in the bow.

you can disconnect the switches to determine the cause. it would be easier if it was happening when you did this. which switch did you replace with the perko switch?

BenC,
it wasn't a replacement, I just added a Perko on-off switch to disconnect the battery from the motor in case the trim motor went out of control. The problem only occurs when the motor is not running...W
