Last yr i bought a 72 bonanza 19ft bowrider tri hull it has a 165 hp mercruiser 250 I-6 I/O is a very clean boat this was to be the first boat i had owned, driven boats in the past but this was my first boat, anyway when i bought it it was in feb and in the guys garage so was unable to test drive but he did start it for a moment in the garage to show me it ran, the boat was $2,500. At that time i had been looking since dec of the previous yr and really only found junk for that price so when i saw it i jumped on it mainly because for that yr of boat it was in good shape and very clean floor had one little soft spot so i figured i was gonna have to replace the floor soon, end of march took it out on the lake to see if i needed to fix anything before i took the whole family out on the lake with it, glad i did because come to find out the fuel pump was bad on it, pulled it back home ordered a new fuel pump drained the oil put new in and put on the fuel pump fired it up and the engine started knocking!! (sorry wasn't intending for this to be a novel) now to my delima. This yr a friend of the family had a 87 bayliner ciera 2150 bowrider with a 5.0 chevy omc and omc outdrive for the same price the interior and floor looks like it just came off the showroom floor it has oxidation on the blue paint that can be easily taken care of with some elbow grease engine was rebuilt 8 yr's ago and has very little use since then, for the last 2 yrs it has not been ran at all sitting in a garage. I have looked online and have only found a fewof these for sale the ones i did find in this condition were running between 5-6 k, he told me it was worth alot more than what he was gonna sell it to me for he said he just wanted his garage back and just didn't use it anymore because they travel so much. Here is my question. been milling this over for a few days and can't decide what i want to do so i'm asking what you all think here. If i sell the bayliner i can possibly make a profit of $3-3,500 i guessing it will cost about $1,000 to rebuild the other motor $500 for a new floor. looking at about $1,500 profit or so when all said and done. only gonna keep one of these boats for no longer than 3-4 yrs then buy newer boat. What is your opinions on this? (sorry don't have pics of either boat at this time). thanks for reading the book...lol.

Dont know where you live but I would be leery of getting $5,000 for the bayliner, even if in really nice shape. It is an old boat, with an OMC which more and more people avoid. Plus, even though it is owned by a friend, you need to have the bayliner professionally checked so you dont repeat your past experience.

If i sell the bonanza the way it is i'll be lucky to get $700 for it the way it is but also hate to put another $1,500 in the boat bringing the total up too $4,000 for the boat, won't get that much out of it when i resell it. should i just chalk it up to bad first time experience and take the loss or fix motor and floor and try to recoup most of my $ back?

I'd pretty much avoid any OLD I/O, especially OMCs.

Maybe that's true NOW but the parts support is only going to get worse. Call your local mechanic and ask their opinion.

Are you saying you have $5000 tied up in two boats? One is nearly 40 years old and needs work, the other 30 years old and needs work?

If you are asking an opinion....I'd stop spending money, sell them both without sinking more money in and buy something newer. You can buy a decent mid 90's 18-20' with a 4.3-5.0 in it for $5000.

Everything mechanical breaks, but you are boating the hard way. :D

Try to find an old Bayliner with the Force L Drive.

It would suit your needs perfectly,

OMC and Volvo went into a joint venture in 94. and in 98 Volvo bought out OMC completely. They only bought the rights to the Cobra series drives and engines, not the old stringers.
In 94 both came out with the Cobra/SX outdrive, the outside of the drive looked very similar to the Cobra, but the insides were all Volvo. There are some transom shield parts that are interchangeable, to the 86-93 OMC Cobra drives, along with things on the engine (Flywheel covers, coupelers, etc) But that is where it ends.
Volvo did not do anything with the old stringers, nothing.

PS: I am a Volvo certified tech, been to all the schools on the drives.
