Have fuel & spark won't start

I reviewed the FAQ won't start for hours. Still need help. I have a 1979 20 hp merc. I have good fuel @ the carb and good spark @ both plugs. I have replaced the fuel pump/dia. I give it a pull the engine fires for approx. 5 seconds and then dies. Runs slighty longer if I prime the carb. Motor ran fine this spring

You say you have good fuel at the carb? Are you sure it is flowing thru the carb. Had almost the same problem on my 20 hp after it sat for many years. Had to take the carb apart twice and clean all the jets and little passages out before I got all the gunk out of it. It runs well now for a 41 year old motor
