I am not trying to reopen a can of worms but in seeing some posts about wake boats and skiers getting to close to boaters fishing or whatever I was appalled to see folks talking about setting up traps and throwing sinkers and lures and rocks at them.
I will say these guys **** me off and even at times have pulled stunts that could have endangered me and mine.
But... You would be the first to convict some guy who got out of his car and shot another for cutting him off or even hitting him in an accident.
I too one time a long time ago was fishing on the shoreline when a boat pulling a skiers kept shooting past. We on a very very big lake and i had waved these people off four times. I was given a finger and the driver threw a bear bottle at me. I was very hot so I gave them back their bottle. Only I misscalculated the bottle passed a handsbreath in front of the skiers face. They were going close to 30 40 mph if it would have hit him it could have killed him. All because of a spot of water. It isn't worth someone's life or limb. Do you know what a 20 pound test fishing line can do to a person go to some boat repair place ask to see a output shaft that has been scored with monofiliment. You saltwater fishermen chime in how many of you have been cut to the bone grabbing a line thinking he has been played out only to find out he still has some fight. Dumping line as a trap is just as dangerous as running a rope cross two trees because some jerk is hotrodding up and down your street on a dirtbike.
The boat registry in Texas is a public record. What is more game and wildlife will record events if you folks want to clean up the town so to say. Then take an active legal role report them. It may not happen right away but if two people report the same boat for the same thing i can almost promise you someone will be getting a talking to.
And for you guys on wave runners and ski's come on there is no need to be @#2342@. By the way while your reporting those jerks make sure to do the same to those want a be bass masters running past a poor guy in a canoe at full throttle.
It goes both ways

Iboats used to have an extreme anti pwc (or waterflea) attitude. I've seen it improve in recent times, but it still runs pretty deep in here... Yes, there are bad ones in every every boating group, but unless you are on a private lake, you don't own the water. At least in my state, its legal to buzz by shore fishermen at 100 feet with a wakeboat fully loaded. 100 feet is VERY close in most circumstances, less than 5 boat lengths away. In other words, what is far too close for comfort for both the wakeboarder and the fisherman is still technically legal.

I agree, people don't realize the consequences of counter attacking... Most of the threats are just internet tough guys. The ones that actually do it should probably just give up boating, its too stressful for them if they need to resort to tactics like that. Legally, you will get the very short end of the stick, its tantamount to road rage. Even if you THINK what you did was warranted, you are in no position to be judge, jury, and executioner. The law takes a very dim view of vigilantes.

Nah. It isn't Dodge City or even close. It is more like CB radios in the 80s; lots of tough talk, threats and chest pounding that would turn into something a lot more civilized in actual face to face confrontations.

Funny you should mention the radio rambos' they are still as bad as ever. I drive a truck for.a living so I here them every time I turn it on. still if as many have blamed the "younger" generation for ruining the day. what kind of example are we allowing others to give them. Although. Bringing up laws about boat safety. I thought the coast guard sets many of the laws and safety. regs. if so wouldn't. these laws be for the whole u.s not different. state to state?

Road rage?

I am a big fan of road rage. Or better put, I will not tolerate rudeness. Not in a bar, not on the road, not on the water.

Flame away, I could care less. Just remember before you choose to behave badly, folks like me are out there.

I see it this way. Boating used to be something only "boaters" did. Now every tom **** and harry has the money to buy a big *** boat or a wake board boat. Do they have enough experience to even know the "ETIQUETTE" of boating? Not too often! At best they are pushing the limits of what is legal. In my state(Wisconsin) If you are born on or after Jan. 1 1989 you must pass the safety course in order to operate a boat/PWC. I enrolled in one of these "safety courses" last year just for grins. One of the things the instructor/boat cop/co. sheriff repeated a lot was...."there are a lot of things that you can do on the water that are legal, but not very smart to do. so common sense should way into every thought you have while on the water". I could not agree more.

Side note- Most of the boating infractions I see actually happen at the launch. Launch rage? YES!!!!!

Some people are oblivious to ramp etiquette, spending 10-15 minutes prepping while on the ramp when they should have done that at home, or they underestimate launching/retrieving by themselves. You start to get a mob mentality when there are 3-4 boats circling waiting to come in or trucks stacked up waiting to launch. I find it's a lot easier to offer help versus beeping and cursing.

I fish mostly during the week so there is not as many of these issues, however when I do fish on the weekends it is nice to have eye candy to check out if the fishing is slow. :)

Or a simple "Hey!...Watch this!!!" As I simply SHOW them how it's done. No cussing/honking involved.

Yes it is frustrating, and a lot of it I believe comes from people that use their boat 2-3 times a year. Launching and backing up is a new experience every time they get to the ramp. people who launch a lot have their times way down. I launch and fish alone a lot and can launch faster then most with 4 people there to help.

Wow. Lemme tell you a story:
A good friend of mine was a big dude, former MMA fighter, nice enough but had a temper to go along with his red hair. One day a guy cuts him off in traffic (not on purpose, according to the passenger who is also a friend). Anyway, red-headed big dude loses his mind and jumps out of the truck at the next traffic light and starts screaming and pounding on the other guy's window. The other guy feels threatened enough to shoot my friend in the chest 3 times with a large caliber hand-gun (legally, by the way).
It was a lovely service, but I'm sure his wife and kid didn't fully appreciate it.

Ok but just remember. no matter how big a bad *** you might be there is always. some one bigger and bidder. besides. bullets. don't much care either. way.
being on the road as long as i have I've. learned that there are some real crazy people out there. and that things can go way to far real darn fast. I agree with J it's easy to be a rambo on the computer and talk trash but when it comes down to it a fishing hole or swimming hole or whatever your fancy isn't worth endangering a life for. and for those that have talked about concealed handguns you might better go back to school you pull that weapon you have just used deadly force, if the court finds that it was unwarranted you have then committed aggravated assault with a deadly weapon doesn't matter if you point it at a person or not showing or drawing the weapon is considered deadly force.

A little kindness goes a long way
While we are talking about ramp rage or road rage I will tell you a little trick that i use religiously to get out of potential road rage incidents. Pulling a 80,000 pound 70 foot rig up and down this nation I have gotten in folks way more than once sometimes even on purpose although not as being a jerk but in defensive driving. Its pretty easy to see a way a person is driving to see if they are hot under the collar. I have averted numerous rage incidents by the simple act of mouthing "thank you" with a smile and wave. The reactions are all almost the same... A stunned pause... A double take... And in some cases a hesitant counter wave and smile. All the while the poor sap is wondering... Why is he thanking me??? can't really ream him a new one while he is thanking me can I ?

All of this is why I like to use ramps frequented by police.

I dont mind rude, inconsiderate, stupid people as long as im by myself.
Watching people make a fool out of themselfs is fun as long.

I am one of those people with a wake boat and jet ski's not all of us are bad.

I was watching some guys playing around on crotch rockets one year they were doing some crazy stunts around my truck and woke me up I started filming them and not long afterwards the vanished. almost every phone today can take videos. you don't have to even do it for real they think you are getting proof they will goplay somewhere else. beside you put some of that hey watch this voodoo on them. at least that is how it always works with me can pull it of 20 times say those words and crash n burn isn't far along

Re: have gun will travel???? its getting to be as bad as dodge city

"Whatever is begun in anger ends in shame." -Ben Franklin

"The great object is, that every man be armed. [...] Every one who is able may have a gun." -Patrick Henry

“An armed society is a polite society.” -Robert Heinlein

“Arms in the hands of individual citizens may be used at individual discretion in private self-defense.” -John Adams

I find the best thing is to just assume everyone is armed. It keeps us all civil.

However, the guy who says simply showing or pulling a weapon is a crime is sometimes/some states incorrect. Often people are misinformed on gun laws. I'm of the mind that mine will stay safely tucked in it's holster unless I'm threatened. At that point, only two things can happen. Yes I carry it always.

Lastly, be sure you know where you're boating. Many (all I think) Army Corp of Engineers lakes are off limits to firearms...period!
