Was up at the boat the other day and started it with a charged battery and tried to swap over to a flat battery whilst it was running (not the best idea Ive come up with I know) but used a set of jump leads so as not to lose connection as I feared damaging charging circuit but one of the leads fell off whilst doing this.
Now when I connect the battery even with ignition off the tach jumps to maximum reading.

It is a 1978 Mariner 175 V6 and was wondering have I fried the rectifier and if so is this much of a job and is it expensive?:'(

You fried it. They are cheap and all you have to do is remove three mounting screws and swap the leads running to the rectifier.

You can actually get a rectifier at Radio Shack for a few dollars.

This is what you want from Radio shack: 25A, 50V Full-Wave Bridge Rectifier.

Re: Have I blown the rectifier

Thanks for the help folks but I am in the UK and we dont have radio shack here and dont have time to wait for delivery, but I have found someone local breaking a mercury 150 any ideas if these parts will be interchangable between these two units given that mecury and mariner are the same company?
