1985 four winns
3.8l motor
800 stringer
i have downloaded the manual from this site and im looking for some help

id like to check the fluid in my trim motor. however on page 312 of the manual it give a fill procedure which is a little vague. there is supposed to be a fill and drain screw on the pump and im not seeing them on mine
anyone got a pic of their fill hole location? they are supposed to be hex head and im wondering if the phillips head screws on mine are supposed to be hex head.
the reason for all this is the trim does not like to come up ( moving from bow down to bow up ) very easily up power have to back off a bit to let it move. if stop moves fine
im thinking shes a little low on fluid

thanks

if stop moves fine
then that sounds like the fluid is ok.
the reservoir level plug is a regular slotted plug. flathead screwdriver. but NOT the slotted screw on the motor body... don't touch that one...it's lower- on the reservoir.

should be a little sticker with a little "two arrows" symbol next to it

when it stops under load, does the pump keep running?
I'm thinking you might have internal leakage past the seals on the pistons.

If you do get going down the lake trimmed out, does the thrust push your bow back down?

inope the pump stops when the switch is released, at any speed.
i thought about the seals ( the boat did sit for about 15 years)
it does seem to hold the trim position that i set.
just makes more niose when moving then i think it should ( which led me to think it was low)
and like i said seems to need a little help when moving the bow up

on my reservior i have a phillips on the side below the motor ( trim motor) no slotted
looks like at least a number 3 phillips pretty big
should i assume the drain is on the bottom. (i cant see a lower screw)

back when ebay was more worthwhile, I had measured and cross referenced all those ram seals and sold seal kits. I might still have all the Parker part numbers somewhere if that ends up being the issue. They are just Parker Tee seals and quadrings available at hydraulic stores for about half of Bombardier's prices.

there's no drain that I'm aware of - just 1 level/fill plug

it's on the starbord side of my unit, and it's slot, no phillips - phillips are holding the field magnets in the motor... you don't want to remove those

it's not fussy - power steering fluid or 5W20 motor oil...

the only reason I'd avoid ATF, is because these rams like to leak, and the leaking ATF seems to want to penetrate the wood stringers and such in the bilge.
