I am getting ready to try the Link and Sync on my Merc 1350 and I wanted to see if I could not rule out some of the things that the "Link and Synch" mentions in the "assuming that nothing else is broken" statement. I have service manual C-90-68647 and I wanted to do the switchbox and rectifier test (plus others if needed) but it mentions equipment that I really dont want to have to chase:

Magneto Analyzer C-91-25213
VOA Tester C-91-52751

The manual is detailed regarding the readings that these produce.....My questions is can I use a decent multimeter to do the same?

Any information of guidance on any of these tests with a multimeter would be appreciated!!!!!

Your multimeter will work just fine. You will need a timing light for the link & sync. There may be a test you can do on your switch boxes using a DVA adaptor with your multumeter but I'm not sure of that.

How do you use the multimeter in place of the Magneto Analyzer.....

Also, let me see if I have learned something from reading other posts....I purchased a "new in box" mercury tachometer (for my 1971 1350)......plugged it up the port at the controller.....idles around 1000 and WOT gives me between 3000-3200 @ 23-25 MPH. With that being said I remember reading something that stated, if the tach works then the rectifier is OK.....is this correct?

I plan on getting a timing light to test what existing conditions are prior to doing the link and sync (to make sure I am not tinkering with something that aint broke).

Thanks in advance.....

You can have a bad rectifier and the tach still work. It depends on what happens to the diodes in it when it blows. If they short out which is most common, it will affect your tach. If they open, the tach can still work. Your WOT RPMs are way low. Is there any adjustment on the back of the tach? If so it should be set to 6P. Check for spark on all cylinders.
