I have an older model but clean metal gas tank on my boat.I just bought the boat and have not filled the tank yet.I'm guessing it's around a 10 to 12 gal. tank.It now has a gauge built into the top of the tank but it is broken and doesn't work.I was wondering if I could remove this old gauge and install a sender in it's place and run a wire to a gauge on the dash? If so does it have to be marine or can it be just an automotive type set up ?<br />Does anyone have any answers and suggestions? Also some directions on doing this if it is possible? Thanks.

VDO make several different fully adjustable 'universal' tank sender units with matching gauge. The difference between marine & auto is tolerence to salt water (& air). Try your local auto parts store.

I did just what you are asking about with my last boat. It was an 15 gallon I think, and it had a funky guage with a needle on it on top. I removed the whole mess and went to Napa and spent $40 ish bucks on a sender/guage combo. I cut the sending unit flange down to fit where the old guage was, wired it up, and it worked fine. If you are dealing with salt water, you may want something meant for it, but I am not in salt, so I didn't bother.
