have reverse but no power ??

'90 225 johnson: It goes fine in fwd, and hits neutral at the proper throttle detent (suggesting the shift-rod is adjusted ok); but in reverse, while the prop reverse-spins at idle, adding rpm doesn't increase reverse speed one bit. Quite a thrill to find this out docking (!)<br />Has anyone ever seen this before? Any suggestions?

The shift cable may have stretched if it was OK before and this just started. Undo the cable and try shifting by hand, in the water, and see if its OK. <br /><br />Good luck!
