I recently bought a boat and this is my first boat so forgive me if I sound not so smart on boats.

The boat came with a 1989 mercury 175hp outboard, my question is does anyone know if this engine has a thermostat, reason I ask is the pee hole does not have a flow of water constantly, after you run it for about 5 mins then the waterflow starts, my buddy thinks it has a thermostat and water doesn't flow until the thermostat opens.

Another question I have is that this engine to my knowledge doesnt have a temp sensor or gauge and I was wondering how I would go about installing one.

Any help would be greatly appreciated as I have yet to by a service manual yet so looking for your guys help until I buy one.

Re: Have some Questions

Those V6 motor have two thermostats. They usually have the telltale downstream of the 'stats, so you do not see water until the motor is warm. Those motors usually have an overheat alarm, but no gauge. The best thing to install is a water pressure gauge. Look for a place on a cylinder head to install it (unused port that is plugged), or tee it into one of the water outlet lines. I used the hose from the top of the head to the exhaust passage, but my motor is a '93 135HPV6, and your is likely a bit different.
