if your starter is OEM by all means bring it to a starter alternator shop. Costs is usually between 1/2 and 3/4 of new.

^Agreed. Nothing wrong with having a starter rebuilt, and it's usually a good bit cheaper.

Not OEM but it was new when put i the boat 5 years ago then the boat sat corroding a perfectly good starter. I trued cleaning up but no go. If its cheaper...why not! thats was basically the big question as the core is in GREAT shape and so is solenoid.

Thanks!

I have found that you get what u pay for regardless of rebuilt, aftermarket or OEM. That being said I went aftermarket with a DB Electrical starter. I had gotten good inputs from folks on the forums and it was super cheap. Around $80 for a 4.3 merc. Since it was bought online there is no core to turn in so you still have the option of getting the old one rebuilt as a spare.

I just bought one from db electric as well. I'll add that apart from being reasonably priced, it is a gear reduction starter so it is lighter and smaller (ie more room to work with when installing). Apparently the gear reduction starters are also more efficient.
