I have been having some awful sinus infections lately, this is the problem, while i'm in the caribbean no problems at all, however lately each time i return to Florida, within a few days this infection rears it's ugly head, my doctor has prescribed me various antibiotics and nasal sprays upon each visit, they all seem to provide some temporary relief then i go back to the sneezing, stuffy nose, itchy throat and the usual miserable feeling.
I had initally tried a number of over the counter anti-histamins and allergy medications and that was a total waste of time and money.
I am hoping that perhaps someone here have had a similar experience and have remedied this malaise by other methods of treatment or medication.

I think someone somewhere always has allergies. Years ago I was told to eat the locally made honey. This honey will have been made with all of the pollens in that area which helps boost your immune system. I love honey, my bother hates it. I'm not bothered by allergies, but my brother suffers and takes many meds and still is miserable during the spring n fall. "Bee healthy, eat your honey" it may get rid of your allergies. Good Luck Vlad............SS

I use Allegra (not D) for seasonal alergies, folks just dont understand what it is like for the inside of your eyes, sinus cavities etc to itch! If you have no insurance they are pricey, $78.00 for 30 generic pills. I have tried the nasal sprays and they help for a short time (like 2 or 3 hours), for me salt and water (saline(sp?) solution) do about the same (though this stings). Do you have any idea what it is that is affecting you? For me it is all molds, and most pollens. Also I stopped using commercial bar soap (I use grandma's(brand) lie soap) to shower with and many allergies went away, this may not work for you, everyone is different. You need to find what is setting you off, you can do this on your own but could take some time. Good luck, oh ya if ya want your Dr to give you allegra tell him/her you want it for seasonal allergies, he/she may even have some samples that you can get for free! I got samples for the first 2 years I took allegra! You may even be able to get some by calling the Dr an splainin whats goin on, varies from Dr to Dr. The *over the counter* stuff dont work at all!

I have suffered from seasonal allergies for my entire life. I have been through all the prescribed medications. The only one that remotely worked was Zyrtec. It is now an over the counter drug.

Two years ago while visiting the chiropractor she advised me to find someone who had bees and get some "raw" honey. It has not been pasteurized. I take 1-2 tsp per day and have little to no problems since. I thought she was a quack and I even told her that, but it works and it pretty cheap compared to the drugs. No side effects as well.

^And this is good also,^ for a stronger dose go to a local bee keeper and get bee pollen (back when I kept bee's it was called bee bread). You want it from as close to your home as possible! May also give an energy boost,,,,

I actually said that to myself when I realized what time I was drinking my first cup of coffee.

back on topic...

have you had any tests to see what you are allergic to? I did this and now I can usually time when things are going to be not so good for me. it also allows me to avoid activites and areas that will give me issues. Dust and mold come to mind right away as a trigger in the FL spot. does the place you stay in FL have carpet? Tile and hardwood floors are a Godsend if you have allergies.

how often do you go between FL and the islands? are you sleeping on dusty sheets when you get to FL? The home front is really sticking in my head as the spot that may be all the issue. I sleep wonderfull the first day or so after washing my sheets and pillow cases (allergic to dust) A Vac with a hepa filter is also a must.

All good questions and suggestions, the floors are wood and tile, we do have a few rugs. I spend two to three months in the islands and one month here, i am a stickler for clean sheets and a dust free living environment, a while back i got a deal on some air purifiers and a have four of them in the house, we do have a nice vacum cleaner but the wife has just informed me that the house cleaner prefers to use her own, perhaps i need to look into that.
I have an appointment with an ear nose and throat specialist in a few days, i also will see about getting an allergy test as soon as i can.

Keeping things too clean maybe a problem. If your immune system does not have anything to fight off to build resistance against, most likely you will have some problems. Some doctors said this is more important for very young children in building their immunity against things in their future. Kids don't spend much time outside anymore and don't get a good chance to build their immunity to outdoor allergies. All that I have mentioned was passed onto me from a doctor.

I think many times medication is way overused. I know people who at the on take of a runny nose, they start popping in pills. Me, I use a tissue and many of them. I'm just tickled pink that I don't suffer from allergies. I feel for those that do.

When you go to the doctor, also have him check for a fungus infection. This is frequently misdiagnosed as allergies. A relative, also in Fla, had "chronic sinusitis" for decades, but it was really a fungus infection. The constant high humidity there makes it bad. Once that was treated, the problem went away.

When I was a kid, we had an old time GP....only thing missing was the horse and buggy...he did have the badly beaten-up leather medical bag.
One of his mantras was that the best medicine you could give a kid was a at least a cup of dirt a week.
Probably wasn't far off when you look at the sterile environment in which kids seem to be raised now, and some of the off-beat allergies that are developing.

One other thing I have heard about is a tea pot looking thing
Can't remember the proper name for it
You tilt your head side ways and pour warm salt water
into the upper side and it runs thru and out the other side of your nose
Basically you flush your lower sinus cavity
the people I know that do it swear it is great
I just have not had the guts to do it yet
I take 3 differant over the counter drugs on a rotation every 3 hours
this time of year

Wasn't it grand? Was working out in the yard and had to strip down to shorts and birkenstocks.

Think Ford is still the buy?

Spring in not my nose's favorite time of the year. I did find a sinus rinse that works great. You mix this salt mixer with water and shoot it up your nose. Blows the stuff right out. I have been using it for four years now.

Yea, I get 'em too. I try not to take antibiotics unless I really need to. Last time I had one I suffered through it for about a year. I never could fight it off by myself so I saw a doctor about it. She wrote me a script for some Keflex and Flonase with orders to start the flonase after the antibiotics were done. The keflex cleared my symptoms in 3 days.

I think I get it from my dogs. I should really go see the doc right now.

Obtw, If you don't have a neti pot you can get this saline in a can stuff that does the same thing. It does provide some temporary relief as does a good hot shower.
