1997 force 120 starts easily after launching.problem comes up after I run for at least 20 minutes & then stop & turn the motor
off for 20 or 30 minutes.when I go to restart the motor it acts really cold natured.I have been making sure the bulb is pumped.
sometimes even have to engage forward & advance the throttle to give it some gas before I turn the key.any ideas?

metalmessiah,

If your engine smokes a lot after such warm start ups, it is a sign of the carbs. leaking fuel into the crankcase. Usually it is one or more leaking needle/seats in one or more of the carbs.

Hi metal
What Djhons said is true and sould be checked out. You said you have to advance the throtle in gear in order to start. Advancing the throtle for starting is proper procedure. The main funtion of this is to reset timing to the best position for a sure start. It also cracks the throtle open a bit for a nice gulp of fresh air to mix with the fuel left (if any) in the crankcase. The problem is the IN GEAR part, This is not good. Are you aware that your control provides a warm-up feature? This allows you to advance the throtle to the correct start position while being out of gear.

my control doesnt have the fast idle lever.I have to engage forward, give it some throttle, put it back into neutral, then turn the key to start it.it wont turn over in gear.it only happens after it has been warmed up & then cools back down.seems like it has been getting progressively worse.

Re: having a problem with restarts....

Hi Metal
Do you have the standard (stock) Force control box? Note I said feature not lever. All single stick outboard and I/O controls have a fast idle or warm-up mode. Some will have buttons at the center pivot of the throtle lever or a grab ring of sorts to pull the throtle sideways while pushing forward. The method you last describe should accomplish nothing. Because you say it does, this could indecate the controls need adjusting a little bit. There is nothing to be gained by pumping an outboard throtle, (like an old car) there is no accelerator or enrichment pump. What may be happening is when you push the throtle lever and then pull it back, is there is enough slack in the control that it leaves the timer set closer to the start position. Note this small amout of slack may be correct and not need adjusted. You will just need to follow proper starting procedure. What ever the case see if the public library has a copy of a manual for Force motors this will help you determine what the problem is.

I have a factory service manual but it seems more geared for the experienced tech.not much on troubleshooting or step by step. a little over my head in most cases.Im pretty sure its the stock control & if it has a fast idel I dont know how to use it....will go outside & look for sure though.thanks for that info.will let ya know what I find.

your boat (stock) does have fast idle. i don't know of many that don't.here's how to use it.pull your throtle/shift lever out toward you.away from the side of the boat, where it is mounted. then advance the throtle.when you are ready pop it back in the orginal position, and go. F.Y.I. when you put your boat in gear, do it with a swift motion.PEACE ;)
