Im finishing up my restore, and started doing some motor work today. Ive read up some on taking the lower unit off to replace the water pump, but cant get the shift linkage to release. It took me a great deal of time to just get the bolt out of the linkage(underneath the carbs) but every time I tried to slide it out it wouldnt release. Am I missing something? Im not a mechanic by any means, but I have replaced water pumps before on smaller outboards. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!!

Have you got ALL of the bolts out that hold the lower unit on ?? Did you get the one under the trim tab ??

so you have the bolt out of the shift linkage and the 6 bolts out of the foot (7 if you include the trim tab that you have to remove to get the 2 bolts under it) and it still will not budge?
Does it move any ammount

yes, all bolts are out. when I take the last one out it only drops 1 1/2" ish, which is just the linkage shifting. Im afraid to get too rough with it, for fear of screwing something up! Should I spray some pb blaster on it to soak over night?

Go to www.shop2.evinrude.com . Scroll down and click on '1989'. Then click on '175 HP'. Choose your engine model, then click on 'throttle and shift linkage', which gives you a parts diagram.

When you say you've removed the bolt for the shift linkage is it the "pin" which is item #3?

As Metric said, pin #3 has to be completely removed. That's the one that goes through the shift rod.

I had the same problem last week, I ended up moving the gear control box from foward to reverse a couple of times, it was enough to unbind the stuck gear rod .
