I recently purchased a 14' Starcraft that came with a Johnson 40hp motor, model 40E 73D. Had trouble getting it started out on the water, once we did, we could only move the throttle about half way (bad cable, replaced, goes full range now.)
The problem is that the motor has a hard time starting, and when it does it will eventually stall out. Checked the plugs, compression, and made sure fuel was making it into the carb. So I move on to cleaning the carb.
I have the service manual, but it is the one that covers a range of Johnsons.
We get everything detached from the carb (choke, etc..) and begin to take the bowl off. That took almost 2 hours!! The placement of the screws made it almost impossible to remove. We were using a screwdriver bit on a socket wrench. It is the only way we could even get a bit close to the screws for removal. After finally getting the bowl off and removing the float, we are stuck at removing the seat for the inlet needle valve.
The carb it self looks clean as a whistle but the gaskets are all shot. We bought a replacement kit but the guy sold us the wrong one so we have to get that taken care of. Is cleaning a carb supposed to be this hard or take this long? Can anyone offer any advice or tips so we can get this thing back on the water? Thanks.
