Having problems staying in gear

I've got a 12 hp sea king 54-58 model not exactly sure which year. The problem I'm having is when I open it up past about 1/4 throttle it slips out if gear and revs up. I haven't looked at it yet but wanted to get an idea where I should look, could it be as easy as adjusting the linkage ?

Thanks

Hi Bill,

It could be the linkage adjustment, as you mentioned, or could be that the dog clutch is getting worn. That means new gears and that could be expensive.

Good luck, Peter

Is the gearshift actually popping out of gear? Or does it stay in gear but slip? If actually coming out of gear, go ahead and think linkage, but that probably is not the real cause. Worn out clutch dogs are the usual culprit. If it is just slipping smoothly, that's a propeller hub.

The shifter stays in place, but the engine revs until its throttled down. It sounds much like a vehicle that the clutch is slipping in and out of.

I read a few things on here and someone had an issue like mine and was told the prop was spun.

I agree, a spun prop hub is a slippage, similar to spinning your wheels on the icy road. Clutch dogs & gears will bang or grind.

No grinding or banging going on. It pretty much just winds up and prop speed fails to follow, probably need to check shear pin as well .
