Having starter issues that have been dragging on for too long PLEASE HELP

i Have a 86 byliner 2550 ciera that i had a real tough time getting a starter for , the starter i bought was a 5314M
for a 8 cylinder 5.7 ltr GM volvo penta , changed the starter and it seems like it won't engage the flywheel
i have shimmed it 6 ways till sunday , it is making a hell of a racket , like a screeching sound
i thought it wasn't fitting right so i had the old end bell on the old starter put on the new starter and it is doing the same thing
What is going on ???? please help
i am worried the starter is turning the wrong way and i need to have the boat hauled out on friday morning
its like a never ending nightmare
