Having trouble finding a prop

Ive got a 1988 85hp force im having trouble finding a prop for. The first place I went to gave me a merc blackmax prop they said would fit but it didnt the diameter was a hair to big and wouldnt seat in the gear case the second prop I got was a vortex that said on the box it was for a 95 and up force but I tried it anyway on the recomendation of the parts guy it wouldnt even reach the gear case and the nut that came with the 102 hub kit was way to big anyway. Can someone please help me by telling me where I can get the right prop I need Id like a 17 pitch cupped.

Props specifically for your motor aren't very plentiful. Take a look here. You'll note two separate categories, one for single/non-through-hub exhaust lower units and one for dual/through-hub exhaust lower units. I have an '87 and an '88 and both have single exhaust lower units. With a single exhaust lower, I'm almost positive you can also use props made for dual exhaust lowers (but not vice versa). You just need the proper nut and thrust washer.

I'm sure one of our masters of the Force will correct me if any of this is wrong.

You can get a quite nice prop for your Force engine at a reasonable price on the auctions. Look for any thing from late Chrysler to early Force. Search: Chrysler/Force propellers and about 30 will come up. Some are buy now and some are bid. Some are stainless and some are aluminum. If Chrysler prop, as long as it is 15 spline, it will fit your Force.

If you want to buy a new one, they sell them right here at iboats.

Forget the Vortex even with the correct hub kit unless you either want to remove the anode in the lower unit or modify the prop itself. It will fit, but the webs inside the prop hit the circular anode. You either remove and replace the anode with a later one, which is much lower, or mill off about 1/4 inch from the internal prop webs.

Small gearcase 90 HP Mercury props (4 inch diameter) will fit with no modification.
