First thing you need to do is get a manual, will pay for itself a million times over. Secondly, what motor are you working on? Thirdly, what seems to be your problem exactly?

what motor? did you disconnect shift shaft, bolt under the trim tab above the prop. if all that is done, remove plugs, and turn flywheel by hand. could be rusted splines.

Its a 1958 Evinrude 18 hp.

What have you disconnected, Brad? There is an inspection plate on the side of the exhaust tower that's held on by two slotted screws. Remove it. Inside you will see two rods connected with a union. This is the shift rod. Remove the lower screw/bolt. Then undo the 4 bolts holding the lower unit to the exhaust tower. Then the final nut at the front of the motor just above the lower unit. Pull straight down and its off. You might have to rock it a bit or give it a couple blows with your hand to get it to separate.

You might also have to move the shift lever to get the shift rod to separate at the union.

I offered to help him in my workshop, but he wants to try it on his own. I respect that. I wish more kids had that much ambition.

hi hightrim sorry about the late reply I have just been going back and fourth back and fourth, to see if the lower unit will come off, 10 minutes ago it came off, I took the old seal gasket off but having trouble putting the gearing back in, I really want to bring this motor with me on next week, but don't think it will be done if I do it myself.

Re: having trouble taking lower unit off??

If you can't figure it out by Friday I'll come down and help you with it, but I can't change you for it. Send me a PM with your address. I don't remember it.

What's the problem with the gears? Did you get the lower unit sealed? Start with that. Don't worry about getting gears back in until you get the shift rod seal changed. There are a couple pins that must be aligned in order for the gears to fit in the case. You probably don't have them in the right position.
