Im buying a 15 1/2' V-hull from a friend last week so were going to take it for a test drive on Lake Michigan.{ I live in Milwaukee.}He's having trouble from the get-go starting it. He finally gets it running, we get almost to the break wall when it dies!!! We drifted about 45mins as he tried franticly to get it running again, all the time asurring me its never did this before. Then he realized the battery conection was loose.I call him an idiot and laughed myself silly as he tried to bribe my secrecy. So I buy the boat and take my wife and daughter for its maiden voyage. 5mins into the trip Im having problems. Its dieing and going slower each time I get it started until it wont start any more. Long story short this land-luber forgot to vent the gas tank!!! Now its my turn to be laughed at!

It only goes to show you. There's always something. <br />I'm originally from South Milwaukee. Are there still dead fish problems in the summer? Used to be really bad 25-30 yrs. ago.

I just sold my boat with 20hp merc on it. The guy I sold it to might have been a first-time boat owner for as I shared with him the order of steps to do before hand-cranking that bad-boy, he looked at me like, "oh boy, this is going to be hard".<br /><br />I said, it's simple:<br />1) sqeeze bulb in fuel line until it is hard,<br />2) pull out choke,<br />3) put throttle to "start" spot.<br />4) make sure it is in neutral,<br />5) pull handle of manual start.<br /><br />My motor typically tries to turn over first time, then sputters. I push in choke and it fires up the second pull. I told him if he fails to do any of the above, it probably won't crank. Trust me, I've failed to do 1-3 before and it wouldn't. Its all part of a learning process,I bin learning for thirty some years now and a couple of weeks ago spent 5 min. and got a tore up knuckle trying to start a kicker motor that I forgot to hook the fuel line to, hooked up the big motor and pumped the bulb figured the kicker would do it itself I guess.

My boat was like James's. It had a order to do things and it had to be done that way. I invited some freinds over to fish with me and he brought his whole family, 4 of them. I said it was cool, he could just pull me out to deep water and let me go from there. I told him what to do and he tells me " I got this, I know how to use a boat." I told him again to which he replied "Are we gonna fish or sit here and talk?" By now I am sure you have figured out that the boat didn't crank. It took me about 45 minutes to get it started after he monkey-fingered it to death. It never did work right after that day. It now sits in the garage collecting spider webs.
