1996 Yamaha C115. Noticed a white powdery substance around the water jacket gasket on one set of cylinders. I do not suspect any leakage of the head gasket. I would like to replace the water jacket gasket. Should I replace both head gasket and water jacket gasket or just the water jacket gasket? Should I replace both water jacket gaskets or only the one I noticed the substance on? Should I replace the head gaskets and/or water jacket gaskets anyway, maybe, as a matter of maintenance? Last question, any gasket sealer required when replacing water jacket or head gaskets? Thanks in advance.

you might as well pull both heads-split off the water jacket covers-clean out all the cooling passages-check the thermostats & replace if necessary...in other words =preventative maintenance on cooling system8)

I wouldn't be in a rush to replace the gaskets. I have a 1986 ProV-150 that has a little white powdery (looks like some sort white residue) on various parts of the engine heads. It's been there about 20 years or so, and I bought the engine new, so, my thoughts it is just a chemical from the gasket material that is used.

Back in 1988 when I lived in Springfield, Mo, I, taken my bass rig (Yamaha engine) to Hydro-Tech south of Springfield who is the best knowledgeable people on what can go wrong on a Yamaha, and they told me that was nothing to worry about. Just part of the heat transfer and colling down process.

NOTE: Here it is 2007 and the engine runs great, and never have had anything done to the engine (head gaskets)... Must knock on wood....

I also wouldn't rush to replace the gasket. I have seen this substance around my gaskets also. I have a 94 C115 and had to take off my head and head covers/water jackets to deal with overheating issues. While removing the bolts for the water jackets two of them were very hard to loosen and eventually broke off. Tries to take out the broken bolt with and extractor. One came out, but the other wouldn't budge. Had to drill out the stubborn bolt and install a heli-coil. If it was me, I would mess with it unless it is causing you trouble b/c it was not fun messing with those broken bolts. Wanted to be very careful because I didn't want to ruin the cylinder heads.

well,I would think that if you broke bolts off taking it apart-that it's already PAST time to take it apart and clean things up...if you don't take things apart on a regular basis they won't come apart8)
