Have a question or two bout a head gasket for a 1986 7.4, 454, mercruiser. Went to auto zone and asked for a 1986 chevy head gasket. First question "what model of car"? Was afraid to tell him it was in a boat cause I’ve been there before so I said vette. I was told that in 1986 chevy didn’t put a 454 in any model car. Is that correct? Was told the 454 was in P/U’s ¾ ton and higher. Finally the final torque is 80 foot lbs. and must be reached in 3 equal steps. With 80 being the final what would the first two be? And because the head bolts go through the water jacket, permatex or something like it must be used to seal the bolt. When doing this, another 5 lbs of torque must be used this means 85 lbs instead of 80. Is this correct?

The proper head gasket for a marine motor has stainless steel crush rings instead of ferrous metals. The only way that you want to use automotive head gaskets is if you are running a closed cooling system, for the motor, using ethylene glycol instead of raw water. All that was said re permatex around the water jacket ports is correct. As to torque; it is critical that you use the correct PSI. I would not rely on word of mouth for that. Consult a manual. Usually you divide the final torque into 3rds and go thru the proper sequence three times.
