I have a j115tlco 1985. After all my preventive maintenance. I torqued head bolts and did a decarb checked compression. Same as last year left side115/110 right side 125/123. Should I change head gasket on left side? Thanks for any advice.

Are you sure its a head gasket? A bad head gasket would show some other symptoms. The most common being over heating. What did you plugs look like? For compression loss with no over symptom and clean plugs I would say start thinking about a ring issue. And If I went as far as doing rings I would go ahead and check pistons and replace.

if you do rings, which i would not, with out trying a head gasket, first. you may as well just rebuild it. you will already have it apart. it is not unusual to have different readings per bank.

Guess I will replace gasket and do a inspection. Iboat has the gasket #0318358. Can anyone tell me the part # for the gasket sealer?

Be carefull getting the head bolts off, take your time, as snapping one off will not be good.

The way OMC originally machined the blocks at the factory can cause a slight difference in compression between the two heads. A 5-8 lbs difference is not unusual between the two heads on some blocks. Yours is certainly more than that-try the head gasket.
