head gasket replacement

Im having to replace a head gasket on a 1995 txrt yamaha 200hp. i used a peice of plate glass and 400 grit wet/dry sand paper to resurface the head to .1mm spec. what should i do for the opposings surface on the block ? should i just clean it with a solvent or sand it or brush it, im just not sure and want to do whats nessesary so i dont have to do this again. would like to hear any sugestions. thanks

you want to make sure its clean and oil free,brake and parts cleaner is fine. and you want to check for warppage with a straight edge heat is damages most headgaskets. running hot is just as bad as overheat, except it doesn't always warp head and it takes longer to fail, so replace water pump and t-stat and check for any resrictions especially in salt water conditions
