I have a 89 50hp force and i was wondering ,how do you really know if your head gasket is bad or is in the process of going bad? I don't know if this is related but the force seems to run hotter than any other motor I have had. When I run it in the tank and in the lake for that matter, and you hold your hand on the head , after about 4-5 sec it gets perty uncomfortable. And when i am on the lake and the weather is a little cool, it seems like my water from the peehole is steamin more than anybody elses! I changed the impeller and the t/stat with no change. When I pulled the pulled the plugs they didn't really looked steamed cleaned , but they weren't what i would call oily either.Would a leaky headgasket cause this?

thnx
mark

Re: head gasket

Sounds like a perfectly happy motor to me. :)

Service the water pump. It should be done at least every 5 years. More often is recommended.

The sparkplugs should look damp but not wet, dark brown deposits. You don't want to see perfectly clean plugs or black glossy plugs. They should also not look bone-dry. That could mean too little oil or running hot.

What Willy said, and... your Force also has exhaust gases coming out with the water spray. This is normal. It looks like a lot of steam, but is exhaust smoke.
