Can anyone give me instructions on how to remove the head gasket on my Evinrude 70 hp outboard? Cannot find anything in the instructions manual.

Re: head gasket

Louise, first make sure you need to remove it.

In general you have to remove all the cylinder head bolts (hopefully none break), then pull the cylinder head off. It may be a little stuck at the gasket surface. You may have to tap it gently with a block of wood or something to dislodge it (Do not pry the gasket crack with a screwdriver). Then you have to clean the old gasket off both the cylinder head and the block being careful not to nick the mating surfaces. Clean everything up. Check the cylinder head surface for flatness. If it is warped take it to an automotive machine shop and they will machine it flat again for a nominal charge. Install the new head gasket, and use a torque wrench to tighten the bolts to the proper torque, and do them in the proper order. After the engine has been run to operating temp, check the torque again.

Re: head gasket

Hi jimd,
Thanks for your instructions. They worked. Now to my next question. The temperature switch - what is its function and how do I test it to see if it works.
The reason for messing around with the engine is that it starts fine, runs for 5-10 minutes and then dies. I have changed gas tanks, impellars, and several other parts. Am now getting seriously tired of not being able to go boating. We have a very short season here in Sweden.
Kind regards and thank you again,
Louise ;)
