Here we go again. I had the head replaced and ran fine. Now we have a crack again in the head. The engine is a 1985 Merc 350/260 and until lately no problems just ran great. The mechanic used stainless gaskets and claims to be the best around and so does everyone else speak highly of him. Am I just looking at an old boat and that is what it is. I promise you the boat handles like a dream and has ran great so far. Do I continue to replace heads or new engine which i am shying away from. Engine has not overheated or been over reved. Any suggestions on what to do? Love my boat and want to put it back better if possible. Some of you experts and experienced boaters help me please. I will answer or fix any computer problems any of you have just for helping me.

I have a similar problem. I have a 1987 260.

Here is what I learned. My heads are prone to cracks, They are made thinner and don't hold up to abuse such as overheating. Mabey the same for yours? Do you have the older style heads, perimeter valve cover bolts?
I would suggest a nice set of aftermarket cast iron such as these

I understand the stock vortex heads from GM, while they are great flowing heads, are not the best castings.
Do your research as to what piston type(flat top or dished) to figure your compression before you purchase heads. Make sure your cooling system is in good shape. I'm sure others will add.

I don't know much about engines, but I don't think many of them like overheating.
