What's the best headgasket available for my Inline 6?

There is a marine mechanic locally with an original Merc gasket for it...it's new, old stock. Get this, or is there a newer, stronger version?

Re: Headgasket for I6

This being an opinion question I'll offer mine. Merc makes some pretty good stuff and most hold up. There are some higher end gaskets but for an inline 6 I don't see the extra cost being needed. If the head and block are stright and flat it should last a very long time. Gaskets that fail most the time happen because of lack of maintenence.

Personally, I have always used Fel-Pro where ever possible, but not finding a marine head gasket from them for your engine. Probably would be OK to use a standard gasket on your engine, since (I think) your not in salt water.

The Merc labeled gaskets would be fine too.
FWIW, I'm about 99% sure Mercury Marine probably sourced them from an outside manufacturer, so you may be able to find a cheaper set for your engine if you drop the middle man.

THIS is the same gasket...$T2eC16JHJIIE9qTYI5fUBRccOMqfFw~~60_57.jpg

I know it's "old"...but it seems to be of good quality. It has "GM" embossed in it also.
