Heads off, should I clean the piston tops?

Two AQ131D B230 Motors. Took off both heads, waiting for new heads to arrive. Should I clean the carbon off the tops of the pistons or just leave well enough alone. If I should, what is the best process to clean them. Please be specific. Should I only clean them when the pistons are at the top of the stroke? If I turn the crank to bring the other two pistons up, do I need to keep turning the crank in the same direction (clockwise) to put #1 piston back at TDC? If I turn the crank counter clockwise, will I ruin the piston rings? Thanks for all the help and answers to my posts. I am learning a lot as I continue this project.

It is a good idea to clean the top of the pistons, excessive carbon build up can cause high comression and engine detenation (pinging). Put the piston at TDC, turn the engine clockwise (if you dont it wont harm the rings but it is a good practice) a carbon scraper can be used in conjunction with a carbon solve cleaner (available at auto parts stores) ask for a top engine cleaner. Also brake clean will work ok but wont desolve the carbon as well. when your done lube the cylinders with clean motor oil as you will probably wash down the cylinder walls when cleaning the pistons. make sure you torque your new heads down correctly, in the right sequence etc. Good luck!

You can also use a wire brush in an electric drill. Wear eye protection and a face mask. Bring each piston to the top of the cylinder to clean it. When you finish one piston, vacuum and blow off the top before rotating the crank. Then clean each cylinder wall with brake cleaner and lubricate with clean engine oil. Hy
