the heads on my 1992 140 Evinrude looper were leaking water and one was spraying at high speeds so i removed them and cleaned them meticulously and installed them with new gaskets and a little permatex. the one head looked like it had been machined at some point and the other didnt as it was pitted. i reinstalled them and ran it for about an hour with no leaks.

then i ran it for the weekend and when i wenjt back to retorque them after about 5 hours use i found one to be sealed but the same head was leaking water out of the top above the t-stat and spraying salt water all over the wiring. that is the head that appeared to have been machined too. retorquing them didnt fix it of course. what can i do? it doesnt seem like there should be that much pressure in there to spray like that. could it be the t-stat springs? or is there a better sealing compound?

also, if it has been surface ground before, could i do it again without throwing off the compression ratio too much? my plan was to have it surface ground again. help is much appreciated. thanks.

You can check for flatness by placing it on a piece of glass. If you can't tell for sure, put some fine grit sandpaper on the glass, and using a figure 8 motion move the head over it gently. Then take a look at it. If it's not lightly sanded in some spots, then it's warped. I believe you can have the head decked to even it back out, but I also believe you will then need to see if there is a "low compression" head gasket, which I have heard is thicker than a standard one, so it will lower the compression in those cylinders. If you don't, the piston could begin to hit your spark plug.

If it's bad enough, just look for a used head(s).

And check the block surface that the head and gasket are mating to. A perfect head will still give issues if the block surface is bad.
