Hearing Aids - A Success

I seldom stop by here as my eyes tend to droop after I have been through the boating stuff but tonight I wanted to share what has turned of to be a success for me. I am 67 yrs old and have had an increasing loss of hearing over the past 10 years or so. I fluffed it off for a long time as I could puck up the sound of most of what I needed. My family started giving me hell a couple of years ago and their pressure only got worse. About a year ago it got to the point that I knew for me that I needed to get some aids. I hit the internet to learn and find out what others had experienced. The result was depressing. The consensus I came away with was that the industry does want to help people but they are rife with price gouging and price fixing. And a decent pair of aids ain't cheap and if you do lay out the bucks a lot of guys will not adapt to them no matter how well they work.

Anyway I do get a small disability check from the VA. The disability also gives me free access to the VA health benefits which I had never used since I always had employer provided health insurance. To make a long story a tad shorter I went through the VA process and got my aids two weeks ago. WOW!! I can now hear birds in the trees, wind rushing through the branches, the TV without a headset, conversations and the readings/sermon at church.

I am still learing how to use them and get adjusted to all that is new. Mine are a new version of the behind the ear type (much smaller and lighter) and are made in Switzerland. They have a small tube which fits down into the ear that pipes in the sound without one of those fake looking ear molds. Each has a volume control and a control to change one of the five digital programs that are pre set. I have fiddled with this a bit but think that I will end up leaving them pretty much alone. The pair also came with a clicker much like the one you have on your key ring for your car. You can use that tho change volume or program but it changes both ears at the same time. You have to use the controls on the unit if you only want to change one ear.

I have been wearing them now pretty much all day. As each day goes by I notice them less and less so far as comfort goes and there are increasing periods where I don't think of them at all. Each unit takes a small battery that is supposed to last for 7 16 hr days and I got 7 out of my first pair though I am not up 16 hrs at a crack - - naps you know.

PM me if you would like to know what units I got as I know the above has a scent of spam. My message of all this is there is hope for the hard of hearing at least there was for me.

Thanks for the info. My wife has been bugging me about getting some but I just have a hard time accepting the fact I really do need them.

I have nothing but great things to say about the VA (and you can hear them now!). I am always glad to see a fellow Vet helped out.

Best of luck with them.

Speak up, son, I can't hear you! :D

Congrats on the aids! Glad you were able to swallow your pride and get them. I am sure the world has come alive for you again. I am a few years behind you, and my hearing is still good (and I hope it stays that way) but I hope if and when the time comes for me to take the plung, I will be do so. I see many older people that want to stay young and independant to the point where they won't ask for/get help, won't wear visual/hearing aids, won't quit driving when they put others at risk, etc.

In fact, I just came from cutting an elderly woman out of a car that she overturned ... just oversteered on a simple turn. Fortunately no one else was coming or she,and possible they, would have been seriously hurt. (I am not sure if it was a sight thing, a reflex thing, or just sleep/daydream thing - no skid marks)

I hope that as I put a few more years on this body I will have the sense to do what is necessary and not let pride get in the way. Congrats, Solittle, for doing what needed to be done. Enjoy the results.

The VA here has a mixed rep. - raves and rants - so to speak. There is a question in some minds about the quality of services that you can get vs. what is available in the private sector. We have several large hospitols in the area and there is a sense that the top medical talent will prefer to work in the private sector. Va medical staff are salaried while the private sector is driven by $$$. The counter to that is, I think, also valid and that is the VA medical staff can focus on care rather than spend a lot of energy on getting managed care/insurance approvals or getting sued as the private sector has to deal with.

My ownly dealings with them has been limited for this hearing thing and they were pros all the way. And they did not seem to push the "cheapest" solution. The hospitol itself is packed with people and is very heavily used by vets.

Oh and vanity/pride were not an issue for me and I would hope for no one else when it comes to hearing. I would rather hear the train headed my way through the tunnel than be splattered on the cow catcher.

Dave - Glad you jumped in with the name. I have the same. My only annoyance at this point is the daily cleaning of the small earpiece - minor when compared to being able to hear.

How long have you had yours?

I am still young, but my family has been pressuring my father to get a hearing aid for years now, but to no avail. Hopefully he gives in soon. Great to hear about your success though!

My tinnitus dont seem to be dues to blood pressure. I havent pursue it much but I see it being a big issue in the future.

I guess its been about 9 months that I've had them and they are great.I'm a Game Warden with Florida so many times when I'm on a boat I just stuff them in my pocket to protect them and sometime in the woods I still cant hear a shot if I'm on the wrong setting.I usually just keep them on the 3rd setting with the double beeps as it seems to filter the unwanted noise better.Good luck with em
