lot's of carbon build up inside , after getting it apart and cleaning it out i have a few quistions for the expert's i know i will be getting 2 new gaskets for the cover and inner plate but ,what do you look for to know that the heat exchanger is done and can i use the old spacer's off of the unit or should i just buy all new stuff.

If it has holes in it, needless to say it's done. If it almost has holes in it (rusted/thin), it's almost done. You can re-use the spacers if they are in good condition. Don't forget the gasket washers between the spacers and inner cover plate.

Re: heat exchanger parts 64 40hp

I just did my 1969 40 HP's outer cover a few months back. The inner cover was heavy stainless steel and had no problems. The heat exchanger itself was in good shape also. I replaced the outer cover, used the same spacers, new inner/outer cover gaskets, and there were two (new) round gaskets used to go around where the heat exchanger tubes go through. Everything was good except for the outer cover (it was ROTTEN). That and busting off quite a few of the bolts made it a funner job than it had to be......but it was a saltwater motor for quite a few years. I'd probably get the new spacers if I was doing it over again.

Re: heat exchanger parts 64 40hp

Thanks tax1969whaler
My heat exchanger is all still there but the threaded parts for heat tube and fresh air just spin around are they supposed to be stationary?
There are no crackes in the exchanger the material still looks ok never done one before so i couldn't tell you if it is time for a ew one

All i was trying to do is to elemanate a could be probleam there was a fare bit of carbon on the outer piston walls but have it back to the orangey brown paint.

Can the exchanger parts be bought at dealers in Canada,as i have bought some parts from Marine engine .com and the parts were priced well but the exchange and shipping and duty was a killar.
THANKS AGAIN

Re: heat exchanger parts 64 40hp

I'm pretty sure they are supposed to be stationary (sealed), or else the exhaust would get into the heat exchanger, then into the choke

Re: heat exchanger parts 64 40hp

Hi tx1969whaler and all
Upon closer inspection of how the part were when i took them off and how they are supposed to be acc. to manual.
the 2 gaskets that go on before spacer to seal exhaust leak were put on before the inner plate, i think that is one of the resons why i was getting alot of carbon and smoke as carb was breathing exhaust.
as to my earlier qustion on if the 2 threaded brass studs should be stationary
they are made in such a way that two sides are flat and they catch in the hole of the outer cover so you can tighten the 2 outer nuts so in my observation and i'am not sure think that the job of the two gaskets before the spacers make it air tight.
If any one Knows for shure please let me know
And thank's again tx for your help greatly appreciated.

Sounds like you got it right. I don't actually use the heat exchanger or automatic choke, but it's still in there. Mine is just plugged off outside, where the air tube used to go. I manually choke it.

Re: heat exchanger parts 64 40hp

Good luck!
When I get to thinking I'm wasting my time on my old motors, I just go out and price new ones. That usually sets me straight. Plus mine sits out in my driveway, and I don't worry too much about somebody stealing my old beat up looking stuff.
