Heating Up!

1976, 75HP: Any ideas on overheating? I have a light on the dash hooked up to the thermoswitch on the head which comes on when at lower speeds/high speeds. I have replaced the impeller and water is coming out of tell-tale. I have ordered a new thermostat, but have yet to install. If water comes out of the tell-tale, is the impeller working okay? Can the thermostat be stuck and still have water exiting the tell-tale? When I have the head off to access the thermostat, should I flush from that point?? Thanks for your responses---I need help to get ready for this coming weekend.

Re: Heating Up!

It could be a faulty temp sensor. Does your head feel hot to touch when alarm goes off? With a cooling system properly functioning, your motor should be warm to touch even at WOT.

Thanks GrindKore...That's a good question and I'll check that out. I think I will pull the prop and put it in a tub of water and let it run for awhile. It could be a defective thermoswitch. I'm thinking about getting one of those infared thermometers and point it at the head, also to determine the temperature. I don't know what it should run though???

I have had two temp sensors go bad in the past. I wouldn't trust them. If you have a telltail, you can feel the water. It should be warm, not hot. You can also put your hand on the exhaust plate and it will be warm but not real hot.

If you are concerned, you can purchase a temp gage from West Marine for about $29 and it has the sensor and gauge, all you need to do is add wires.

John
